| ITEM: |
Content Expertise / Skills and SoTL |
| Definition or Description: |
The formally recognized knowledge, skills and abilities a faculty member possesses in a chosen field by virtue of advanced training, education, and/or experience. |
| Comment: |
Since SoTL most often involves exploration of teaching in one’s discipline, content expertise is always required. However, content expertise in one's field might be applied in a collaborative, cross-disciplinary SoTL study thus serving a meta-professional purpose as well. In any case, the relationship of content expertise to any teacher’s practice (even out of the base profession) is always present. |
