Information Technology Skills

and SoTL

Definition or Description:

Information technology (IT) is a term that encompasses all forms of technologyy used to create, store, exchange, and use information in its various forms (business data, voice conversations, still images, motion pictures, multimedia presentations, etc.). It is a convenient term for including both telephony and computer technology in the same word.

Comment:

Interest in information technology and its applications to teaching and learning has increased dramatically in the last decade due the availability of computers in classrooms and to the emphasis on asynchronous and distance learning. While studies of technological applications have a mixed history (see Clark, 1983; Russell, 1999), many SoTL investigations contain technology components. For example, a series of interdisciplinary studies under the general title “The Visible Knowledge Project” at: http://crossroads.georgetown.edu.vkp, has explored the applications of technology under a wide range of circumstances across disciplines. Since information technology is a frequent component of contemporary teaching and learning, it is reasonable to consider it in SoTL studies.
