Instructional Assessment Skills

and SoTL

Definition or Description:

Those skills in developing and using tools and procedures for assessing student learning (including test construction, questionnaire and survey construction, grading practices, and grading procedures).

Comment:

Since the focus of assessment is on teaching and learning, and since most SoTL studies consider both process and outcomes, assessment skills are very important. How do we know what students have learned and how they learned it? How do we discover the sources of difficulties if they arise? What methods are available beyond traditional classroom tests or standardized measures of achievement? Though there has been much discussion of assessment in higher education, many faculty are not familiar with classroom assessment techniques (external link to a definition and to an Angelo & Cross reference) and/or how to use them. This is a major area for faculty development.
