ITEM:

Intructional Design Skills

and SoTL

Definition or Description:

Those technical skills in designing, sequencing, and presenting experiences which induce learning. Requires knowledge in skill in task analysis, the psychology of learning, the conditions of learning, and the development of performance objectives.

Comment:

There is an obvious relationship between the process of instructional design and SoTL studies. SoTL explores either the process or outcomes of instruction and design skills are necessary in order to conceptualize, plan, and carry out interventions. However, since instructional design skills are not frequently taught outside of education, and since many faculty have little or no teaching experience prior to their first faculty position, there can be no presumption of the necessary skills being present. Indeed, one of the most frequently cited reasons for lack of faculty enthusiasm about SoTL is a lack of specific knowledge and skills in instructional design and instructional research.
