Instructional Research Techniques

and SoTL

Definition or Description:

Those technical skills and techniques associated with the scholarly inquiry into all aspects of teaching and learning.

Comment:

SoTL involves instructional research. Faculty must be familiar with the methods and processes of this research or they must have access to support from colleagues or knowledgeable staff. However, as Cross (1996) notes, classroom research is context-specific and “…does not (always) require technical research skills such as sampling and making statistical inferences.“ (p. 3). Likewise, many studies are qualitative and do not employ inferential statistics.
