Personnel Supervision and Management Skills

and SoTL

Definition or Description:

Skills in communicating effectively, developing teams, managing diversity, managing conflict, delegating responsibility, coaching and training, giving and receiving constructive feedback, and motivating and guiding either individuals or groups to achieve specific goals.

Comment:

Instructors who lead multi-section courses or who supervise part-time instructors or teaching assistants, must assume certain personnel management responsibilities as well as responsibility for the performance of these individuals as well as the overall effectiveness of the instruction. Studies of the effectiveness of the lead instructor’s management and its impact on learning outcomes would be legitimate SoTL efforts and these studies would require both knowledge and skills in this area.
