The CEDA Meta-Profession Project
ITEM:

Research Techniques / Skills

and SoTL

Definition or Description:

Those skills in acquiring existing knowledge, and/or creating or discovering new knowledge, within one's area of formally recognized content expertise.

Comment:

Finally, research in the discipline can inform content decisions, instructional process, the nature of the assignment of student work, and to some degree parallel SoTL research. Clearly, in disciplines like psychology and other social sciences, there is a close parallel to instructional research, but in the physical sciences, the methodologies differ considerably. Even where the methods differ greatly, knowledge of the base profession research process and findings would allow instructors to create instructional plans that might have specific relevance to students and help them to learn material more effectively. An SoTL study could explore how and why such interventions work, as well as how to maximize their effectiveness.
