SERVICE (to the General Community)

Definition or Description:

Voluntary Service: The application of one's recognized area of expertise (base profession), in the community, without pay.

Institutionally Assigned Service: The application of one's recognized area of expertise, in the community, in response to a specific administrative assigment (becomes identical to, or an expression of, Service to the Institution).

Comment:

 Examples of Voluntary Service:

  • A faculty member of the Music Department directs the church choir;
  • A faculty member of the Accounting Department keeps the books for the local United Way chapter.
