About the Workshop

Student ratings of teaching serve as an important component of many faculty evaluation systems. Either by design or default, institutions often place great weight on student rating data in making decisions that impact faculty rewards, career progress and professional growth. It is critical that student rating forms be designed and constructed in such a way as to provide valid and reliable information for these purposes.

Many institutions choose to develop their own student rating forms rather than use one of the professionally designed, commercially available forms. Unfortunately, the majority of locally designed student rating forms have not been constructed in accordance with professionally accepted psychometric procedures, leaving institutions at risk when making decisions based on data from student rating forms of questionable reliability and validity.

This workshop provides a step-by-step procedure for designing and developing valid and reliable student rating forms. Workshop participants are provided with practical methods, tools and critical professional techniques for designing a student rating form. Also discussed are procedures for administering the form, reporting the results, and interpreting and using the data for professional growth.
